Carthage, NC – Well folks election day has came and went once again. This year I decided to capture some scenes from around my local county, Moore County NC. I met with the good people at the Election Board Office in Carthage who gave me the opportunity to tag along with the head of Training and Recruitment, Nicholas McCraw, throughout the day.

Our first stop was across the street at the Carthage Agricultural Center Polling Place. Electioneers and a couple of candidates dotted the yard lines along the building with their signage and tents, while voters slowly trickled in. Candidates of local elections, such as school board and local government offices, spend the day visiting polling places in their district and talking to voters while helping electioneers from their party campaign for those last minute votes.

Our next stop was Vass Town Hall, where inside the voting room poll workers tirelessly assist voters and keep the line moving. Poll workers, who are volunteers, arrive at the polling place at 5:30am and spend the day making sure their polling place is running smoothly by signing voters in, assisting in voter registration, and upholding proper legal procedures.

Next up was the Aberdeen Town Hall. What interested me about this Polling Place was all of the electioneers outside. Their dedication to campaign for their party is unmatched, as many of them will be at the polls just as long as the poll workers.

Director Towanna Dixon is seen working in her office at the Moore County Board of Elections Office in Carthage, NC. on Election Day, November 3, 2026

We returned to the Elections Office, where Director Towanna Dixon was hard at work answering phone calls and putting out fires around the county. The Board office workers had been at it since 4:00am, and their day doesn’t end until all of the ballots and appropriate paperwork is accounted for. I was told that in previous elections the team would stay until the early morning hours making sure that their job was complete.

The next event of the day was the Board Meeting. Election Board members met at 5:00pm to review ballots, inspect voting machines, and handle any important matters that arose from the day so far.

I then went to the Sandhills Polling place to capture the polls as they closed. All of the polling equipment had to be broken down and ready to be picked up the next day. The Poll Judges then sit down and collect and file their paperwork, including voter lists, ballot count, and operating paperwork of the day.

I had a great time learning the behind the scenes of how an election operates in a small county. Special thanks to Towanna Dixon, Nicholas McCraw, and every member of their team for the exclusive look.
