This week I decided to take a little stroll around the beautiful downtown Southern Pines Area and decided to take my camera along. After walking around a bit I started noticing the amber colored lights everywhere and decided to take a few moody photos.

Something you learn in photography school pretty quick is that light is the most important element of photography. The word photography translates to “painting with light” (or something like that), and it is the fundamental component in how an image is captured. You also learn in photography school that not all light is the same.  Light exists in many different forms. The temperature of light determines if it is a cool, blueish light or a warm, amber light. These lights I’ve captured downtown are definitely on the warmer side, and I’ve decided to use the color they give off to shape these images.

I was walking down the street and passed this beautifully lit alleyway. I stopped in my tracks, turned and snaped this one. I love how I was able to capture a bunch of different lights sources in this one image. I like how the image is layered with different light sources, and they all light different areas of the alleyway. It’s almost like every lit area is a puzzle piece, and when you put them all together, you can see the whole alley.

I knew I had to capture this building when I passed it. The unfortunate part is that there was a smart car directly in front of it, so I couldn’t get a clean shot of the whole thing. In hindsight, I guess that would’ve been an interesting juxtaposition, but not the image I was focused on. I decided to get close and capture the door to the hallway between the lamps.

This passageway is one of my favorite spots in town.

One response to “Amber Light”

Hey LTD! I love the subject you chose for this topic. The color of the architecture is very rustic and on the more white/gray/brown side because of the materials used to make the building. I think these materials go great with the warm lighting, it compliments the older look it has. I think it would be more interesting if there was people in these photos so we could see their response to such a gorgeous environment. But at the same time, it’s very fitting for the scene. Though it may be void of life, and we as photographers are always told that people is what makes the photo, it still is very lively. This building was built by people, designed by people, payed for by people, and wanted by people. We are things that give meaning to everything, and this speaks the vision that people had for it. I also think it’s a great reminder that we are humans. We sleep, go to work, and eat. This pieces of existence are always here doing the exact same thing every single day. They whole purpose is to existence in our vision, but even out of view they are till always there until time slowly does away with them. All this to say without buildings and/or structures we would be lacking in scenes. Yes if there were no buildings we would still have plenty of photos to take, but the buildings are an expression the people. It shows the life and personality of the city. I think these are great and the second one is my favorite. Keep up the great work Kolby.
