With this ever changing world we wake up in every morning, time can fly by so fast that the little things become invisible. While chasing that next deadline, quota, or goal, it seems like we never have enough time to stop and smell the roses. This week, I decided to slow down and capture the little things that make life unique; and what better environment to photograph than restaurants?

I decided to hit up a couple of local favorites of mine. The first being Wisco Taco Foxtrot in Whispiring Pines. I had the opportunity of managing the Wisco kitchen over the summer, so it was nice seeing the crew.

A bratwurst dog on a tray sitting in a service window of a commercial restaurant and the cook who made it in the background.

For this photo, I wanted to highlight the finer details of the food while including the person who made it in the background. The Wisco Bratwurst is a staple of the restaurant, and I think I did a good job of capturing the golden crisp pretzel bun and the sauerkraut stacked high. The Bratwurst dog is being kept warm in the service window, while the kitchen stays in motion in the background.

Being a midwestern and Mexican fusion restaurant, Wisco Taco Foxtrot uses a lot of cilantro. In this picture, I wanted to capture the finer details of the mundane task of chopping said cilantro. I decided to use a photo of the cook cleaning his knife, as it symbolizes a job complete as he wipes the loose pieces back into the pile of rough chopped cilantro below.

My next stop was The Sly Fox, a gastropub in downtown Southern Pines. I hung out with the fellas for a bit before capturing this beautiful image of the chef adding a ramekin of tarter sauce to a plate. This small, miniscule task happens at least a hundred times a day in your average restaurant, and I’m glad I was able to make a stunning image out of it.

While life keeps moving around us, sometimes it’s nice to slow down and notice the little things.

Hey LTD! I love your concept for these photos. There’s something about capturing the behind the scene details that is fascinating to me. As most restaurant goers, never seen what goes on within the kitchen. The meticulousness, the focus, the struggle, and the patience one must hone in order to keep the kitchen moving. And this does an amazing job of turning the mundane into magic. These days there is so much constant repetition of everything ever in all of our lives. From making a morning meal to taking an after work shower. That rinse and repeat cycle can become numbing after awhile. That’s why I adore this post. There is so much beauty everywhere in our everyday life. Yet people can get so lost in their own little worlds. Worried about this, that, and the third. If we all could just pause for one moment, take a step back, and breathe; we’d be able to see.
